More about the Kazakh language

The Kazakh language is a member of the Turkic language family that belongs to the northwestern or Kipchak branch. People from Kazakhstan and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China speak the Kazakh language. A dialect called the Kipchak-Uzbek dialect has a relation to the Kazakh language. Hence, some people consider the Kipchak-Uzbek dialect as the dialect of Kazakh.

Until the 20th century, the Arabic script was used to write Kazakh. After the 1917 Russian revolution, Kazakh was written in Latin script. Two decades later it was again switched to Cyrillic script. But, in 2017, Kazakhstan started transitioning back from the Kazakh language to Latin script.

Russian is another language spoken by people from Kazakhstan. Although students are taught in Russian, Kazakh is used in education. The Kazakh language is also used in print and media. People from Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Afghanistan also speak this language.

Germany also has a few groups of Volga Germans who speak Kazakh. Stalin deported these Kazakh-speaking Volga Germans to Kazakhstan in 1941. They were sent back to Germany after the Soviet Union collapsed.

There are three main dialect areas of the Kazakh language spoken in Kazakhstan, according to  Amanjolov (1959). They are Northeastern, Southern, and Western. The standard Kazakh language is based on the Northeastern dialect. Speakers of the common Kazakh language are among the well-educated people in Kazakhstan. A significant number of the population speak Northeastern and Southern dialects whereas there are only a few speakers of the Western language.
